Josef works as an educator in Cologne, and as a traveling storyteller.
He specializes in stories translated from the French author Pierre Gripari,
traditional German, French, and American Folk Tales, stories from the American author Mark Twain,
in addition to English authors, Robert Louis Stevenson, Lewis Carroll, Edith Nesbit and J. K. Rowling.

Other works include the „Kölner Gedichtles“ (Poems about the daily life in Cologne), 1999.

Josef has also translated two of Gripari´s pieces,
„Wachtmeister Waldi“ (L´inspecteur Toutou) and „Satina Teufelstochter“ (satinette, fille du diable)
(Teiresias Verlag, Cologne) as performance pieces for the theatre (Presented in 1999 / 2000, 2009, Cologne).

Josef has written three children´s plays and published them in book format,
„Die Kinderlieder-Kompanie“.
(Die Kinderlieder-Kompanie + Seppl und der Osterhase + Prinzessin Ampelnase)
These include new interpretations of traditional German children´s songs and fairy tales,
many nearly forgotten.

In 2001, he published his first picture book of German poetry,
„Beiss mir nur mein Flöckchen nicht!...“,
illustrated by Lusja Shatalova.

The same year, 2001,
he authored a book including further poems, presented by the German firm "Books on Demand" (BoD).

His last book of genre poetry was created after a lost love, in 2002.
He worked through his broken heart with a book project intitled:
„Liebe, Bauchweh, Teddybär!...“,
Poems in sadness, loneliness and finally...
2003 was a period of renewell and re-energizing - and than ...
...a vision of a new + brighter future once again ;-)

June 2004,
he completed a book of children stories,
with the magic title:
„Die wundersamen Zaubergeschichten des Meister Jobs !...“.

The second picture book,
published in 2005 / January 2006,
is Josef´s translation of a children´s story, Dracko, the Dragon Eater, and Me, by the American author CHERYL CHAPMAN,
This is a wonderful tale set in a castle, with a little hero girl entitled:
„DRACKO DRACHENFRESSER !...“.

The First (anthology) appeared, exactly in time for Christmas, December 2006 and the second anthology in July 2007,

The newest book, a cemetery-based project "DIE ENGEL LEBEN NICHT NUR AUF MELATEN",

Josef Mahlmeister lives and writes and works in Cologne, Germany.
His photographic projects are also availaible to galleries in Cologne and surrounding cities.
He has been a member of
the French Association „Les Amis de Pierre Gripari“, of Paris since 1995.

He has run his own publishing house
since the summer of 1998:
Palabros de Cologne.
The title also serves as his storytelling Pseudonym.
